USS California Christening Ceremony – Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010
The Navy will christen the nation’s first submarine named after the state of California on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Norfolk, Va. When delivered, the USS California (SSN 781) will be the most advanced submarine in the world.
The Inland Empire’s Navy command located in Norco, Calif. – the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Corona Division – is offering a rare opportunity for students and the public to participate in this historic occasion. Called the “USS California Science Experience,” NSWC Corona will feature a remote broadcast of the ceremony and will be the only California-based event on the day of the christening.
As part of the day's activities, the Navy is also hosting students, primarily 4th through 8th graders, for a hands-on interactive science and engineering experience, which includes games, exhibits and displays. The event will also be the California debut of the Mission Ocean Challenge, a competition where teams use a submarine simulation to find an underwater volcano.
Space is limmited and online registration is required. Stay tuned for registration opening
